Jekyll Island Community Prepares for Wildfires

10/12/2009 – Because of its efforts to reduce the vulnerability of homes and landscapes to wildfire, Jekyll Island has earned Firewise Communities/USA recognition from the National Firewise Communities Program.  A recognition ceremony will be held on Thursday, Oct. 8.

"After learning from Jason Richardson about the wildfire near Waycross two years ago, I knew this was a program that could benefit Jekyll Island,” said Lorraine Donohue, one of the Firewise Community Task Force members.

"Jason explained that wildfire had completely burned an area of 10 miles by two miles within three hours; that's the entire size of our island. At that point, Nancy Kring Rowan and I agreed to spearhead the community task force."

To receive Firewise Communities/USA recognition, Jekyll Island met a rigorous set of requirements over the past three years. "By preparing homes, structures and landscapes before a wildfire occurs, Jekyll Island has dramatically increased the chance that homes and structures will be protected when a wildfire occurs,” according to Jim Smalley, manager of the Firewise Communities program.
