Nov. 7, 12:35 p.m. - Chatham County Still Counting Absentee Ballots

Savannah Business Journal Staff Report

November 7, 2018 - Absentee ballot clerks in Chatham County are still counting 1,633 absentee ballots, after working through the night on the 6,170 absentee ballots that were received by the deadline of 7 p.m. on Nov. 6. In all, over 7,200 were mailed out.

These 1,633 votes are not yet in the numbers reported to the Georgia Secretary of State.

Next on the to-do list is to tackle a number of provisional ballots. There is no information available yet on the number of provisional ballots cast.

According to Russell Bridges, Chatham County Elections Supervisor, local election officials had to re-supply eight of the county's 60 polling locations yesterday and into the evening hours to meet the demand for provisional ballots. These ballots are used when a voter has valid ID, and believes they are registered to vote, but are not on the register for the polling location they go to.

Overseas ballots, such as from military personnel, can still arrive up to 5 p.m. this Friday, Bridges stated.

A State Inspector from the SOS's office is currently observing the process at the Board of Elections' Eisenhower headquarters.

"I presume it is because we're still counting," said Bridges, who oversees elections in Chatham. "I have never had counting go into the next day."

There were extremely long lines at locations across Georgia yesterday, owing to a higher voter turnout but also documented issues and reduction in the number of polling machines. For example, after waiting over four hours in line, voters were still casting ballots after 10 p.m. at Rothwell Baptist Church in Pooler.
