June 22 – Bryan County Democrat Lisa Ring announces run against Congressman Buddy Carter for the GA-1 District

By Lou Phelps, Savannah Business Journal

June 22, 2017 – She’s been hinting about a run for months. But, yesterday, using social media, Richmond Hill Democrat Lisa Ring announced that she is running for the GA-1 Congressional seat in 2018, challenging Republican Congressman Buddy Carter.

Ring, who is the chair of the Bryan County Democratic Party, was also active in the Bernie Sanders Campaign in 2016 and a Sanders delegate to the National Democratic Convention.  She is also active with Georgia Democratic Party.

“I had to decide if I wanted to run for the state Legislature or for Congress,” she said. “It was agonizing, but I wanted to run for the seat that I thought could make the biggest impact,” she told the Bryan County Times this week.  State Rep Ron Stephens, whose district covers the Southwest corner of Chatham County and all of Bryan County, is rumored to not be running for re-election in 2018.  That provides an opening that the Chatham County Democratic Committee and Bryan County Democratic Committee have not had for many years – an open seat.

The National Democratic Party is working actively to find challengers for all Republican seats at the Congressional level, as well.

Ring said that she did not want incumbent Rep. Buddy Carter to run unopposed in 2018 in order to insure a discussion of the issues that affect the voters in the 1st District.

Carter was first elected in 2014, he had no challenger in 2016.  In 2014, he won the Republican Primary and then easily won the seat that had been vacated by former Congressman Jack Kingston.

Kingston held the seat for 22 years, and in those 11 election cycles, was often unopposed. That's something that area Democrats don't want to see repeated.

To date, Congressman Carter has not announced whether he will seek re-election. He is reportedly the 49th wealthiest member of Congress, and owns a pharmaceutical company with both retail stores and wholesale drug sales.

According to Ring, “It’s time for the people’s representative to represent them, not special interests.”

She has an active ethics complaint filed against Carter before the Federal Election Commission that alleges he used funds from his former State Senate Campaign fund illegally.

“I plan on being a different kind of candidate,” Ring told the Bryan County Times. “I’m not going to be holding high-priced fund raisers or attending fancy party events,” the paper reported.

Ring is Vice-Chair man of the Georgia Democratic Party’s Rural Council; large portions of the 1st District are agricultural and rural.

Her husband is an active duty soldier at Ft. Stewart, and Ring points to the 76,000 veterans and four military bases in the district as an area of her focus. “I’m a military spouse and a military mom,” she adds.

She also believes that there is the potential that the changes to healthcare many end up negatively impacting more than 300,000 residents in the 1st District that have pre-existing conditions, she states.

A campaign chairman has not yet been announced.

She states that she has been active in politics since her college days at Temple University in Philadelphia, and she plans to begin by “getting out and meeting the people in the district, making sure they are registered to vote and talking about the issues,” according to the Bryan County Times.

Ring is the mother of four children.  Two are grown, one is leaving for Ft. Benning in July and her youngest child will start the 6th grade in the fall.
