June 5, 2019 - The rescheduled Seventh Annual Matt’s Moon River Cruise, sponsored by the Law Offices of Joe J. Steffen, Savannah Bike Law, will be held on Saturday, June 15, from 2-6 p.m. at PERC Coffee Roasters, 1802 E. Broad St.

The event is named in memory of Matt Kohler, who was hit from behind by a driver on July 26, 2012 while riding his bike on U.S. Highway 80 in Bloomingdale. It will feature a recreational bike ride leaving PERC at 1p.m., a silent auction, a raffle and a special beer brewed in Matt’s honor. Bicycle valet parking will also be offered.

“Due to no fault of his own, Matthew lost his life while bicycling,” said Debbie Kohler, Matt’s mother. “And when someone loses their life due to a bicycle or pedestrian crash — there’s a domino effect. Each person who knows the fallen will suffer, as well as anyone involved.”

The goal of the event is to educate the public on how to safely share the road with cyclists and increase awareness of the troubling increase in the number of people on bicycles who have been killed on Georgia’s streets and roads.

“Education for bicyclists — so they bike safely, as well as for pedestrians to walk safely is critical,” explained Debbie. “However, if we leave out the component of the car drivers, we fail. Auto drivers must learn to be aware of bicyclists and pedestrians, and realize their vehicle is a deadly machine if used improperly.

“Let’s work to make streets safer so spouses, parents, friends, and children of bicyclists and pedestrians don’t have to grieve in the loss of their loved one. Everyone can make a difference and make our streets safer for people biking and walking.”

Tickets are for the event are $10 online and at the door. T-shirts are also available for $15 at the event, or for a combination event + shirt pre-registration price of $20.
