March 20, 2019 - The Savannah Children’s Choir (SCC) has been announced by the Young People’s Chorus of New York City (YPC) as the newest YPC-inspired chorus in the latter’s newly formed YPC National, Inc. (YPCN) network. The announcement was made at the YPC Gala on March 12, 2019.

Francisco J. Núñez, Founder and Artistic Director of the award winning Young People’s Chorus of New York City, made the announcement along with YPC’s announcement of the launch of YPC National, as an independent non-profit organization founded to facilitate the creation and development of YPC-inspired youth choruses nationwide.

As a YPC-inspired chorus, SCC will continue to operate independently under its local board, while gaining access to YPC National’s extensive artistic expertise and resources.

Roger Moss, co-founder of SCC who retires later this spring, commented, “In a way, SCC has come full circle. Our mission and values were inspired by the great work of YPC and Francisco’s commitment to the empowering and uniting of children through music. Francisco was a great friend and resource in SCC’s early days. I can think of no better way to continue the work we have started than through our participation in YPC National and having access to its guidance, repertoire, and artistic expertise.”

Elaborating on the announcement, Mr. Núñez stated “Young people are the strength of our cities, and providing an oasis for children from diverse neighborhoods to work together and learn about each other can make a difference in not only their personal lives, but in building stronger communities through the power of music. Savannah is no different than New York in that regard. Music is universal. We look forward to helping SCC build on its more than 13 years of success in these areas with the children of Savannah and the Low Country.”

YPC National’s approach is based on the core values of YPC, which include:
• Artistic Excellence: Attaining the highest level of musicianship and professionalism.
• Diversity: Welcoming children, conductors, and staff of all racial, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Education: Providing academic opportunities and support.

As a YPC-inspired chorus, SCC will collaborate artistically with YPC National and enjoy access to YPC National’s extensive resources, including the YPC National Lab, a direct link to YPC-inspired choruses around the nation; YPC National Studio, a professional development program for staff; YPC National Works, helping choruses build distinctive programming by sharing YPC commissioned pieces; and YPC National Gives, the philanthropic arm of the organization.
