July 11 - Deep Center’s Slam Team Fundraises for International Competition

Savannah Business Journal Staff Report

July 11, 2019 - Deep Center will host “The Pote Poet’s Showcase,” a slam poetry performance by Deep Center’s Slam Team, on Sunday, July 14 at 12:30 p.m. in the courtyard of The Grey, located at 109 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd in Savannah. Doors open at 12 p.m., and seating is limited. This event is free and open to the public and a variety of refreshments will be served. Attendees will have the chance to donate to Deep Center at the door and throughout the event.

In 2018, Deep Center convened its first-ever slam poetry team. For the past year, team members have been writing, performing, and competing regionally, uplifting their stories and those of their communities. “The Pote Poet’s Showcase” will enable Savannah to witness Deep’s Slam Team before the team departs on July 17, 2019, for the Youth Speaks Brave New Voices Festival in Las Vegas, where they will compete with other teams from around the globe.

“Savannah has a rich history of spoken word and slam poetry,” said Deep Center Executive Director Dare Dukes. “We’re thrilled and proud to be sending our city’s first competing team to represent Savannah at Brave New Voices, and for our youth to have the chance to compete with young poets from all over the world.”

Youth Speaks’ annual Brave New Voices Festival brings together hundreds of young poets from around the world for a five-day celebration of arts education, artistic expression, and civic engagement. This July, Brave New Voices will be hosted in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Deep Center’s Slam Team has been invited to compete.

“The Pote Poet’s Fundraising Event” will feature the Slam Team’s original spoken-word pieces, which draw on team members’ personal, familial, and communal experiences and cover a variety of subjects, from injustice and trauma to healing and transformation. Audience members will have the opportunity to help the Slam Team’s meet their July 15 fundraising goal of $5,000, helping offset the costs of travel to Brave New Voices. Those who are unable to attend can still make a donation at http://deepcenter.org/give.
