Savannah Business Journal Staff Report

April 29, 2019 - On Tuesday, April 23, 2019, the Landings Women’s Golf Association (LWGA) held their annual Golf for a Cure tournament to benefit cancer research.

This year’s tournament raised a grand total of $102,670 for the Mercer University School of Medicine Summer Scholars Program.

“We have been told by one of the officials at Mercer that they would not be able to do the Summer Scholars Program without our donation,” says Tournament Chair Anne Warhola.

The Summer Scholars Program focuses on biomedical research that is clinically relevant and has a high potential application to improve patient care. The program’s research projects cover the entire spectrum; from early detection and diagnosis to development of improved treatment options with a focus on personalized therapy (treatment focused on the particular tumor cell types with a specific patient).

This program was chosen by the LWGA because Mercer only accepts medical students who are Georgia residents, and they must make a commitment to practice medicine in Georgia. This keeps all funds in the local area.
