Savannah Business Journal Staff Report

January 22, 2020 - Savannah/Chatham Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) will host their annual meeting and breakfast on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2020 from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. to honor the volunteers and community partners who work tirelessly to change the stories of children who have experienced abuse and neglect in Chatham County. The event will take place in the Eckburg Auditorium at Savannah Technical College.

This year’s theme is “There Is No Place Like Hope.” Often, the idea of hope seems elusive to many children in foster care. Decisions are made without their input and they feel shuffled from one place to another without guidance. But this year’s keynote speaker, Shimaine Quimbley, wants to change that. She believes that our foster care system should heed her call, ‘nothing about us, without us.”

To this end, Shimaine works with EmpowerMEnt, an advocacy group founded by former and current foster youth to change the foster care system.  During Shimaine’s time in foster care, she experienced 12 different foster placements before aging out at 21 years old. The time Shimaine spent in foster care made her want to create change and make a difference for other youth in the foster care system.

Join Savannah/Chatham CASA for their annual meeting to hear what Chatham County can do to restore hope in an overburdened system. The staff and board will also take time to recognize committed CASA volunteers who actively work to change the stories of children in foster care as well as honor the dedicated stakeholders across our community.
