Savannah Business Journal Staff Report

January 17, 2020 - Georgia Tech-Savannah is set to host a “Learners and Leaders” breakfast series on Wednesday, Feb. 19 to discuss how complex factors help determine the best way to execute evacuations. Pascal Van Hentenryck, a professor in the Georgia Tech H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial Systems Engineering, will lead this discussion.

Van Hentenryck’s research in evacuations has led to the design and implementation of novel planning and scheduling algorithms that scale to large cities and disasters. Van Hentenryck will share his research, showing its impact on decision making, and how Savannah can best use this information to plan for future evacuations.

“Large scale evacuation planning is a critical need in coastal communities,” said Diane Lee, Executive Director of Georgia Tech-Savannah. “This insight is incredibly useful for local cities and businesses to improve their evacuation plans, in case of any emergency.”

The discussion, which will include remarks followed by questions from the audience, will take place on the Georgia Tech-Savannah campus at 210 Technology Circle. Breakfast and networking will begin at 7:30 a.m.; the program will run 8-9:30 a.m. Cost, including breakfast, is $15.

Georgia Tech-Savannah’s Learners and Leaders series is an effort launched in 2014 to help companies in the coastal region stay current. To date, members of the coastal community have heard speakers on topics of relevance to the business community, including technology, innovation, sustainability challenges and solutions for port regions, safety management and its impact on your bottom line, and to how to groom your company’s next leadership team.
