January 28, 2019 - The St. Barbara’s Philoptochos Society, a Greek Orthodox Christian women’s group focused on conducting and funding philanthropic work in greater Savannah, will be hosting their 16th Annual Savannah International Food & Wine Tasting on Feb. 23 from 3 p.m. at the St. Paul’s Hellenic Center, located at 14 West Anderson St.. This popular annual event will feature more than 50 wines from the U.S. and around the world, and a variety of signature dishes from some of Savannah’s best restaurants, all for a great cause.

All residents, visitors, and tourists 21 years of age and older are welcome to attend and sample wines from around the world and small plates from Savannah’s best restaurants and food outlets.

“As a group, we believe it is important to contribute, support and participate in philanthropic activities that will help those in need in our local community,” said President of Savannah’s Philoptochos, Bonnie Danos. “We look forward to continuing our mission by inviting everyone to join us in making this year’s event an unprecedented success. Funds raised from the entrance fee, donations and sponsorships will go towards local charitable organizations who rely on donations for their important work.”

This year, the charities selected include Employability, SCI’s Meals on Wheels, and Old Savannah City Mission.

Wines served at the Savannah International Food and Wine Tasting will be selected under the guidance of Diane Rousakis, a renowned wine connoisseur and distributor. The event will again feature the ever-popular Mystery Wine Tavern, where a $10 donation
will entitle guests to select from a wide array of wrapped bottles of red and white wine, each with a different value (Valued at $10 and up). A $35 donation will entitle you to a selection of four mystery wines.

This year they will also be hosting a silent auction that will include gift baskets from Byrd Cookie Company, The Peanut Shop, Savannah Sweets and The Memorial Hospital Gift Shop, as well as gift certificates and packages from the Art Bash Studio, Crystal Tavern, The Salt Table, Revolution Yoga, Howlin Hound, Tybee Vacation Rentals, Beachside Colony Resort, and other great donations from Savannah retailers.

“I am proud of the commitment of our Philoptochos who give of their time and talents to serve those in need,” said Father John Wallace, priest at St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church of Savannah. “I also appreciate the support, generosity and donations from so
many of our local wine distributors, restaurants, retailers and sponsors who make this charity event a success.”
