Savannah Business Journal Staff Report

December 6, 2017 - The Savannah Bicycle Campaign will hold its annual Pedal Medal reception, sponsored by SouthCoast Health, on Thursday, Dec. 7 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Held at the Historic Kennedy Pharmacy, this event honors an individual who has worked to make Savannah a more bicycle friendly community.

This year's Pedal Medal award recipient is Debbie Kohler, a tireless advocate for safer streets. She's spoken at Georgia Rides to Capitol in Atlanta and here in Savannah at Matt's Moon River Cruise, which is named for her son who was killed while riding in Bloomingdale in 2017.

“Debbie has been a compelling voice in the call for safer streets in our region and the need to educate drivers on how to safely share roadways with people on bikes,” said John Bennett, executive director of the Savannah Bicycle Campaign. “Her involvement with Matt’s Moon River Cruise and other advocacy efforts in Georgia have brought these serious issues to the forefront and provided much needed attention to efforts aimed at reducing injuries and deaths. We are grateful to her for her leadership in this critically important cause."

John Arney will also be honored at the event as SBC’s volunteer of the year. John is a dedicated volunteer with their New Standard Cycles program and frequently serves as a ride marshal on their community rides.

Tickets are $50 and are available at

The event— which features food, beverages, and a silent auction — also serves as a fundraiser for the Savannah Bicycle Campaign. SBC’s volunteer of the year is also recognized at the event.
