Jan. 8 - Oatland Island Wildlife Center to Celebrate Grand Reopening Jan. 12

Savannah Business Journal Staff Report

January 8, 2019 - Oatland Island Wildlife Center will celebrate its grand reopening with a celebration on Jan. 12, 2019 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to show its appreciation for the support and assistance the community has offered during their storm recovery efforts. Admission to the event is free and includes live music, animal encounter and enrichment programs, crafts, an open house at the Heritage Home Site, and, of course, cake! Food trucks will also be on site during the festivities.

Five months ago, Oatland Island was struck by a tornado and sustained extensive damage to trails, roads, boardwalks and several animal exhibits and buildings. Through the recovery period, Oatland Island Wildlife Center has been closed, however, its 501C3 non-profit support group, Friends of Oatland, has received many offers of volunteer assistance, monetary donations and fundraising events.

Oatland Island Wildlife Center is a unit of the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System and is open to the public, although it primarily serves as a science field study site for students throughout the region. It features the 2-mile long “Native Animal Nature Trail” that winds through maritime forest, freshwater wetlands and salt marsh habitats and links many native animal exhibits such as wolves, alligators and cougars.

For more information about the event or Oatland Island Wildlife Rescue, visit oatlandisland.org or call (912) 395-1500.
