Birch Communications Continues to Grow

Category: Technology & Innovation

Acquires Cleartel assets, adding to priavte IP network

Birch Communications announced this week that the company has completed the acquisition of all of the active customers and network assets of Cleartel Communications, Inc., adding another 80,000 business and residential customers to its growing network.
It is Birch’s seventh “tuck-in” acquisition in three years, according to Vincent M. Oddo, Birch president and CEO. Birch’s strategy is to significantly increase customer density and expand the reach of its state-of-the-art private IP network though both “tuck-in” acquisitions and organic growth, he explained.
The customer’s received service under the brand names of Supra Telecom, NII Communications and IDS Telecom, explained Chris Aversano, Birch COO, who leads the network engineering and customer operations organizations.
Headquartered in Atlanta, Birch Communications entered the Savannah market this year. The company “is one of the largest competitive telecommunications carriers covering 32 states across the nation,” said Greg Corwin, marketing director.
“Birch is the first in its class to deploy a private IP-network utilizing soft switch technology to deliver innovative, high quality, affordable voice and broadband communications services to small and medium business customers,” added Corwin.
“We couldn’t be happier to welcome the former Cleartel customers into our Birch family,” said Oddo. “In addition to our exceptional customer service, these customers will also benefit from a wider selection of voice, broadband and managed IT products and services.”
Birch is targeting small- and medium- sized business customers. In Inc. Magazine’s annual “Inc. 5000,” published in August, Birch was included in the list of the U.S.’s fastest-growing private companies.
“This is an extremely significant honor considering that Birch has been in business for more than 13 years,” said Oddo. “Typically the higher growth rates are realized by young entrepreneurial startups – after all, the number one company this year is an insurance startup with 19,812 percent growth! We keep our entrepreneurial spirit is alive because we earn the trust of our customers every single day. I think we’re successful at it!”
The 2009 Inc. 5000, serves as a unique report card on the U.S. economy, he believes. “Despite the ongoing recession, aggregate revenue among the companies on the list actually increased to $214 billion, up $29 billion from last year, with a median three-year growth rate of 126 percent.”
Birch’s three year sales growth was 148 percent, and is ranked number 2,135. Birch was one of the top two competitive local communications companies honored in the “Inc. 5000.” In 2004, Birch was ranked in the top 500 private companies in the “Inc. 500,” ranked number 335 out of 500.
