Oct. 17 - Jekyll Island Authority Proposes Master Plan Amendments for Campground Expansion, Public Safety Complex

Category: Lowcountry Business News

Savannah Business Journal Staff Report

October 17, 2019 - The Jekyll Island Authority is proposing an amendment to its 2014 Master Plan to convert 12 acres of undeveloped land to expand the Jekyll Island Campground and to convert approximately three acres of undeveloped area for construction of a public safety complex. Because the land is currently described as “undeveloped” in the Official Code of Georgia, a Master Plan amendment is required for the projects to move forward.

A public hearing will be held on Nov. 7 at 5:30 p.m. at the Jekyll Island Convention Center, 75 Beachview Drive North, during which the public can provide comments pertaining to the proposal. Comments may also be submitted via the Jekyll Island website at www.jekyllisland.com/masterplan through Nov. 7. The Board of Directors of the Jekyll Island Authority will consider approval or rejection of the proposed amendment at its regular Dec. 17 meeting at 9:30 a.m. at the Jekyll Island Convention Center.

The 2014 Jekyll Island Master Plan limits development on Jekyll Island to 1,675 acres, of which 1,609 are currently designated as developed, including 12 acres designated for future campground expansion. The 2014 Master Plan also allows for up to 46 acres additional land restricted for health, public safety, and public recreation purposes – not commercial or residential uses. The 3 acres for the public safety complex would come from this allocation.

More information on the proposed masterplan amendment is available at www.jekyllisland.com/masterplan.
