Aug. 31 - ABC Series, Ocean Mysteries with Jeff Corwin Films on Jekyll Island

Aug. 31, 2011 - The Jekyll Island Authority’s Georgia Sea Turtle Center is gearing up for an exciting day with the Georgia Aquarium and Emmy Award winning eco-adventurer, Jeff Corwin.

Today between 12:30 and 2:00, at Jekyll Island’s Great Dunes Park, film crew of the new ABC series Ocean Mysteries with Jeff Corwin will be releasing Murphy, a threatened loggerhead sea turtle, back into the ocean. Murphy, a stranded hatchling, came to live at the Georgia Aquarium a couple of years ago. Before arriving at the aquarium, Murphy lived at the Jekyll Island 4H Center. Since arriving at the aquarium, Murphy has been an ambassador to its species by educating millions of our guests about this charismatic species and the perils they face. Murphy has now grown to a size that will increase its chance of survival. Our hope is that Murphy will reproduce and help the population increase in the wild. In order to prepare Murphy for its release, our biologists have been weaning the turtle off of human interaction and teaching him to forage for food.

In addition to this exciting animal release, Emmy Award-winning TV host and animal advocate, Jeff Corwin, will be joining the aquarium for this special occasion to film an episode for the upcoming television series Ocean Mysteries. Georgia Aquarium, working in partnership with Litton Entertainment, will launch Ocean Mysteries, an all-new, 26-episode, weekly TV series to be featured on ABC beginning Sept. 3, 2011. Corwin will work alongside Georgia Aquarium and Georgia Sea Turtle Center team members for this exciting animal release. This will be the second trek to Jekyll Island for the Ocean Mysteries crew; the team filmed an episode this past June with the Georgia Sea Turtle Center’s Dr. Terry Norton and Research Coordinator Kimberly Andrews.
